(Zahra Aziz, Rawalpindi)

Pollution problem is one of the frightening and alarming issue of Pakistan. This includes air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, climate change due to deforestation, misuse of pesticide and soil erosion. These are serious issues and day by day getting worse.

Population is growing rapidly, in search of jobs and better facilities people are moving towards cities. Due to this urbanization and lack of planning more problems are emerging. Unfortunately, not much has been done to tackle these issues. Pollution and other such issues have been shifted to secondary priority and war against terror has primary.

The World Bank report in 2013 stated that Pakistan’s top environmental issues include air pollution, inadequate supply of uncontaminated drinking water, noise pollution and the health deterioration of urban and rural populations due to pollution.

These environmental concerns not only harm Pakistani citizens but also pose a serious threat to the country’s economy. The report also stated that the increase in industrialization, urbanization and motorization will inevitably worsen this problem.

With the population increase, the environmental degradation in the cities is getting worse and irregular settlements are increasing day by day which will result in jungle of buildings with no town planning.

There is no time to lose, the world bank report published in 2013 says is not new, the quantification may be debatable but the fact is that problem is getting worse. Now time has come that we must take steps to control the pollution. Here are some action to be done to tackle the pollution problem:-

There should be treatment of industrial waste water, after proper treatment that would be allowed to through in rivers. It has been reported that contaminated water and industrial waste which has been put openly and thrown in water canals. That is finally added in Arabian Sea and harms the water species in river and in sea.

The large number of vehicles burning fossil fuels are adding up in pollution is also a main cause to increase smoke pollution.

Food pollution is also a great concern, no hygienic measures are adopted by hotels, restaurants anywhere. Many bottled water supplying companies does not fulfill the rules and regulations. Polluted water is main cause of 80% diseases.

Globally it is duty of government to provide clean healthy and hygienic environment to the citizens of that country. In our country this has been put on secondary priority. Ultimately the scenario is adding up reduction in productivity, it is now need of the time to get the things fixed for ourselves and for the sake of our future.

Although responsibility is fixed on the people enjoying power and authority but for the eradication of pollution and providing a safe and secure environment which leads to a healthy life style for the people of Pakistan, Government alone could not get the desired results unless we all stand united together in this battle to combat pollution.
