Mohammed Yousuf |
| More Info |
Mohammed Yousuf, formerly known as Yousuf Youhana before he converted from Christianity to Islam in 2005, gradually became one of the best batsmen in world cricket from the time he debuted for Pakistan in 1997-98. A compact batsman able to play shots all around the wicket. His consistent run-making and reliability at number four and five helped Pakistan to develop one of the most powerful middle-orders of all time along with Inzamam-ul-Haq and Younis Khan. It was with Younis that he shared successive stands of 319, 142, 242, 0 and 158 against India at the start of 2006. That year was his most successful as he broke Viv Richards' 30-year record for scoring the most runs in a calendar year with 1,788, compared to Richards' 1,710 in 1976. An amiable, jovial character, Yousuf shocked Pakistan cricket in 2007 when he quit the team and signed for the rebel Indian Cricket League in protest at being left out of Pakistan's Twenty20 World Cup squad. This was a decision he later reversed, which cost him a place at the IPL.
