Ingredients
  1. 8 oz. Masoor dhal
  2. 1 pint (U.S. 2i cups) salted water oil for frying
  3. 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  4. 2 green chillis, sliced
  5. 1 onion sliced
  6. 1 clove garlic, crushed
  7. ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
  8. Salt to taste
Method
  • Wash dhal thoroughly and leave to soak for 30 minutes. Drain and place into a saucepan with the water. Bring to the boil; cover and reduce the heat. Simmer very gently, stirring occasionally until soft and creamy. Add more water, if necessary. Heat some oil in a small frying pan and fry the mustard seeds till they crackle. Add chillis, onion and garlic and fry well till onion begins to brown. Add to dhal with the turmeric and mix to combine before serving.
  • Note: Preparation time 5 minutes, Cooking time 1 hour, To serve 4
