The first consignment carrying 42 buses for the Karachi Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) reaches Karachi Port. The buses are the first back of two, containing around 80 buses. While the second batch is arriving soon. Governor Sindh, Imran Ismail broke the news through his Twitter. He tweeted that two Cargo ships containing 80 Buses for the Green Line Metro are on their way. It was announced on Sunday that the first consignment dock the shore. A small ceremony also held to receive the Cargo at KPT.
Karachi is one of the world’s largest cities and the only one without a proper mass transit public transportation. Millions of people commute daily through obsolete transportation with no safety and ride quality. The arrival of this first consignment carrying the vehicles is a ray of hope for the people of Karachi. The city’s traffic conditions are worsening with each passing day. Hundreds of thousands of people from throughout Pakistan flock to the city in search of a better life for themselves and their families. This increases the congestion on the already collapsing public transportation.
Green Line BRTS is going to be one of Karachi’s major public transport systems. It is under development since 2017. The estimated completion back then was the end of 2017, but the project got new deadlines ever since. Work went to a snail pace after the previous Government’s regime. However, the current Government again revived the work and it is in full swing. It looks like the miseries of Karachiites are about to end, or at least lessen with the commencement of Karachi Green Line Bus Service’s rapid transit.
Asad Umar, the Federal Minister of Planning, Development, and Special Incentives is enthusiastic about the project. He says that Karachi Green Line BRT is a modern technology-based transportation system, comprising a 22-kilometer dedicated corridor. It will provide an easy and comfortable commute to more than 135,000 passengers on daily basis. The second batch of the buses will arrive in October, and the service will begin operations in November this year.
