UN calls for return to democracy in Myanmar after junta dissolves Suu Kyi’s party

The United Nations has expressed concern over the dissolution of party of ousted Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, the National League for Democracy, by Myanmar's military junta.

Talking to media in New York, UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said we want to see a return to democracy in Myanmar as well as release of Aung San Suu Kyi and other detainees.

The military set a deadline in January for political parties to re-register under a new electoral law and dissolved 40 parties including Suu Kyi's NLD for failing to meet the registration deadline.
