Firaq Gorakhpuri Poetry – Raghupati Sahay better known by his pen name, Firaq Gorakhpuri was a marvelous writer, uncompromising critic and an eminent writer of 19th century. His contemporaries counted on the powerful and influential Urdu poets of Allama Iqbal, Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Kaifi Azmi, Josh Malihabadi and Sahir Ludhianvi. Firaq Ghorakhpuri’s Shayari is remembered for its melodious composition which captures the reader in its depth.

Firaq Gorakhpuri was born in Gorakhpur and received his early lessons in Urdu, Persian and Sanskrit languages from his father. Showing resilient interest in Poetry, Gorakhpuri decided to be adorned in the art of poetry. He is remembered as the “Poet of Pain and Ecstasy”. Firaq Ghorakhpuri’s Poetry held expressions which are raw, innocent and challenging. He is believed to be among the most influential Pre-modern poets who paved the way for modern Urdu ghazals. He was an unfortunate man who lost his wife shortly after marriage, following his son’s suicide who was a young child. He lived almost isolated and alone for 40 years while his poetry career experienced 60 years of total life span.
