Three cheers for Pakistan as we finally get the
license to use 3G technology in the country! If you’re new to the term
3G and how it will make our lives so much better, then no fear, we’ll
cover the basics with you.
What is 3G?
3G technology allows fast, on-the-go internet access on your mobile
phone. 3G is an evolution of the 2G technology or Edge that has been in
use in Pakistan. Most of you would know that that the ‘E’ sign when you
were using internet on your phone stood for Edge. This ‘E’ sign denoting
Edge will be replaced by 3G, ‘H’ or ‘H+’
What difference will this make to you, an existing or a new user of
mobile internet?

The 3G internet experience will differ from 2G or Edge not only in terms
of speed but also in terms of the services offered. Earlier, video
streaming on the go was impossible. Now you can be stuck in traffic and
stream the T20 cricket match on your phone you were missing out on!
What other benefits will 3G bring?
Entertainment is only one of the many aspects that 3G is expected to
improve our quality of life in. We can look forward to increased
internet usage across the country which is something all cellular
companies in Pakistan would be very excited about! Cellular network
companies have been striving to make internet access more and more
prevalent in Pakistan- for instance Telenor’s ‘Internet for All’
initiative focuses on a prosperous and empowered Pakistan.
High speed internet on the go can contribute to education by
distributing information easily and providing teaching/training material
to remote areas. It is also expected to contribute to more diverse and
secure financial services on mobile devices.
