Huawei Mate 20 Pro vs. P20 Pro: Who Wins the Race for Outstanding Cameras?

In 2018, the P20 Pro Huawei was launched and was ranked high on the photography benchmark website DxOMark with their three-camera setup.

Talking about the latest Mate 20 Pro launched couple of months back; the device was launched without a DxOMark score. Therefore, it was predictable for some people to think the Mate 20 Pro could score the same, not making any improvements. For Huawei, however, Mate 20 Pro achieved the same score as the P20 Pro last year with 109 points.

The camera score of DxOMark is a combination of camera and video capture scores. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro scored the same 114 points as the P20 Pro in the camera section.

Major advantages of Huawei’s new camera are the improved noise control in low light conditions, as reported by DxOMark. The dynamic range and exposure is awesome, white balance and color rendering are good. Focus feature is fast in most scenes and zoom is also awesome.

The disadvantages of Huawei’s new camera are that some details look not natural. Details are lost in large aperture mode, focusing with the flash is be unstable and there’s some “ringing” around the edges.

In comparison with Huawei P20 Pro, the former version had better score (+10 points) as far as bokeh effect is concerned.

DxOMark did not reveal how that was possible; however, some suggest it might be due to the black & white sensor the P20 Pro packs, which could be better at mapping out the background and isolating the subject.

Along with the exposure, focus, color, and other improvements, Huawei Mate 20 Pro also brings new super wide angle lens. This feature is not helpful in getting additional points but it is still appreciated by masses.

As far as the video aspect is concerned, 97 points are scored by Mate 20 Pro, 1 point lesser than P20 Pro. This is because of its predecessors who had better noise control and stabilization features.

DxOMark still praised the Mate 20 Pro’s focus in videos, white balance, color reproduction and other details. Either way both handsets are on top as far as video goes, ahead of the iPhone XS Max with 96 points.

In a nutshell, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is an outstanding camera phone but not as inspiring as the Huawei P20 Pro launched a year back.

DxOMark themselves called the second one a “game changer”, meanwhile the Mate 20 Pro only gets praised for its triple cameras.
