Record Sales Reported in Smart Phone Business: Huawei

The consumer business sales of Huawei Technologies Co exceeded a record $52 billion in 2018, the company said on Thursday.

This occurred due to strong demand for its premium smart phones, as it continued to face heightened global scrutiny of its activities.

The huge increase of around 50 percent in the consumer business revenue of the company saw that unit replace its carrier business as its largest segment by sales, Richard Yu, the head of the consumer division, said in Beijing.

Last month Huawei claimed that the total revenue rose to 21 percent which is $109 billion in 2018, without providing a breakdown of segment performance.

On Thursday, Huawei unveiled its first 5G base station chipset titled as ‘Tiangang’ along with most powerful 5G modem in the world, Balong 5000.

Richard Yu said it was the world's first 5G modem that fully supports both Non-Standalone (NSA) and Standalone (SA) 5G network architecture.

This powerful chipset has been in use in its high-end phones and server products. Although, it has already cleared that it has no intension to become a separate semiconductor vendor that competes against the likes of Intel Corp and Qualcomm.

World's biggest producer of telecommunications equipment, Huawei has been facing subject to intense inspection in the previous year over its relationship with Chinese government and US led allegations that its devices might be used by Chinese for spying. However, Huawei has denied these accusations repeatedly.

United States and its allies, including Australia and New Zealand, have restricted Huawei's access to their markets.

Finance chief of Huawei Sabrina Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada last month on the request of the United States.

She has been released on bail but is still in Canada as the United States pursues her extradition on allegations she defrauded banks with Iran-related sanctions. Huawei has denied wrongdoing.
