In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

The hour drew nigh and the moon was rent in twain.﴾1﴿ And if they behold a portent they turn away and say: Prolonged illusion.﴾2﴿ They denied (the Truth) and followed their own lusts. Yet everything will come to a decision﴾3﴿ And surely there hath come unto them news whereof the purport should deter,﴾4﴿ Effective wisdom; but warnings avail not.﴾5﴿ So withdraw from them (O Muhammad) on the day when the Summoner summoneth unto a painful thing.﴾6﴿ With downcast eyes, they come forth from the graves as they were locusts spread abroad,﴾7﴿ Hastening toward the summoner; the disbelievers say: This is a hard day.﴾8﴿ The folk of Noah denied before them, yea, they denied Our slave and said: A madman; and he was repulsed.﴾9﴿ So he cried unto his Lord, saying: I am vanquished, so give help.﴾10﴿ Then opened We the gates of heaven with pouring water﴾11﴿ And caused the earth to gush forth springs, so that the waters met for a predestined purpose.﴾12﴿ And We carried him upon a thing of planks and nails,﴾13﴿ That ran (upon the waters) in Our sight, as a reward for him who was rejected.﴾14﴿ And verily We left it as a token; but is there any that remembereth?﴾15﴿ Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!﴾16﴿ And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?﴾17﴿ (The tribe of) A'ad rejected warnings. Then how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings.﴾18﴿ Lo! We let loose on them a raging wind on a day of constant calamity,﴾19﴿ Sweeping men away as though they were uprooted trunks of palm-trees.﴾20﴿ Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!﴾21﴿ And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?﴾22﴿ (The tribe of) Thamud rejected warnings﴾23﴿ For they said; Is it a mortal man, alone among us, that we are to follow? Then indeed we should fall into error and madness.﴾24﴿ Hath the remembrance been given unto him alone among us? Nay, but he is a rash liar.﴾25﴿ (Unto their warner it was said): To-morrow they will know who is the rash liar.﴾26﴿ Lo! We are sending the she-camel as a test for them; so watch them and have patience;﴾27﴿ And inform them that the water is to be shared between (her and) them. Every drinking will be witnessed.﴾28﴿ But they call their comrade and he took and hamstrung (her).﴾29﴿ Then see how (dreadful) was My punishment after My warnings!﴾30﴿ Lo! We sent upon them one Shout, and they became as the dry twigs (rejected by) the builder of a cattle-fold.﴾31﴿ And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?﴾32﴿ The folk of Lot rejected warnings.﴾33﴿ Lo! We sent a storm of stones upon them (all) save the family of Lot, whom We rescued in the last watch of the night,﴾34﴿ As grace from Us. Thus We reward him who giveth thanks.﴾35﴿ And he indeed had warned them of Our blow, but they did doubt the warnings.﴾36﴿ They even asked of him his guests for an ill purpose. Then We blinded their eyes (and said): Taste now My punishment after My warnings!﴾37﴿ And in truth the punishment decreed befell them early in the morning.﴾38﴿ Now taste My punishment after My warnings!﴾39﴿ And in truth We have made the Qur'an easy to remember; but is there any that remembereth?﴾40﴿ And warnings came in truth unto the house of Pharaoh﴾41﴿ Who denied Our revelations, every one. Therefore We grasped them with the grasp of the Mighty, the Powerful.﴾42﴿ Are your disbelievers better than those, or have ye some immunity in the scriptures?﴾43﴿ Or say they: We are a host victorious?﴾44﴿ The hosts will all be routed and will turn and flee.﴾45﴿ Nay, but the Hour (of doom) is their appointed tryst, and the Hour will be more wretched and more bitter (than their earthly failure).﴾46﴿ Lo! the guilty are in error and madness.﴾47﴿ On the day when they are dragged into the Fire upon their faces (it is said unto them): Feel the touch of hell.﴾48﴿ Lo! We have created every thing by measure.﴾49﴿ And Our commandment is but one (commandment), as the twinkling of an eye.﴾50﴿ And verily We have destroyed your fellows; but is there any that remembereth?﴾51﴿ And every thing they did is in the scriptures,﴾52﴿ And every small and great thing is recorded.﴾53﴿ Lo! the righteous will dwell among gardens and rivers,﴾54﴿ Firmly established in the favour of a Mighty King.﴾55﴿

Surah Qamar with English Translation

Surah Qamar (The Moon) was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) in Makkah. Surah-al-Qamar is the 54th Surah of the Holy Quran. The Ayat (Surah) consists of 55 Ayaat (verses). Among Muslims, this ayat is commonly known as Surat-al-Qamar. The first section of the Ayaats briefly explains a miracle performed by the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). This miracle was the famous splitting of the moon performed by the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) when he was in Makkah. He did this in response to a challenge from the disbelievers. From Surah Qamar Para Number 1 to 55 the blessing, attributes, miracles of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) and wrath of Allah is explained.

The second verse, however, explains the response of the believers after witnessing the miracle, which is written as they responded: “they saw the sign and turned away claiming this miracle to be sorcery or magic”. This incident is not only mentioned in Surah-e-Qamar but also in various other books written by the companions of the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم). There are two explanations of Surah-e-Qamar. The first one being the explanation of the miracle performed by the Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and the other in which it is told that the Judgement day is destined to come and on that day the believers and the disbelievers will stand separately. Furthermore, Surah Qamar with English translation indicates that those who are destined to go to Paradise will go there, whereas, those condemned to Hell will go to Hell.

Surah-Al-Qamar was revealed in Makkah, this the reason why it focuses so much on the disbelievers. The word Qamar itself means “Moon” that is used to warn the disbeliever about their inevitable fate in the hereafter. Moreover, the Moon is also the symbol of Islam. This indicates that the ideology may also be that the Moon is the symbol of Islam because the lunar cycle determines the structure of Islam.

Surah Qamar ki fazilat (importance) is that it strikes the heart of the disbelievers and makes them realize that they are wrong and if they continued to evil doing they will suffer.

Surah-al-Qamar also explains the idea of rejection, truth, and punishment for the disbelievers all in contrast to the previous punishments endured by the people. There are different stories mentioned in Surah Qamar with English translation. The story of Hazrat Mosa (عليه السلام), Hazrat Nuh (عليه السلام), Hazrat Musa (عليه السلام) and the people of ‘Aad and the punishment of Allah (سبحان و تعالىٰ) they endured because of their disbelief in the messengers of Allah and refusal to his command. The stories are divided into sections.

The first part explains how Allah (سبحان و تعالىٰ) tried to guide them, the second part explains how they went astray and refused to believe in Him and third, the Punishment they suffered.

If you want to read about the stories of the Prophets and what they faced during the preaching of the message of Islam, Surah Qamar ayat 10 to Surah Qamar ayat 45 and onwards have what you are looking for, however, from Surah Qamar Ayat 43 the punishments of the disbelievers are discussed. Moreover, Surah Qamar Ayat 49 is the one in which Allah (سبحان و تعالىٰ) says that “And we created everything according to an estimate”.

Surah Qamar benefits if recited in the night. Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) told us that “Whoever recites Surah-al-Qamar will shine like a full moon on the day of Judgement”.

Reviews & Comments

Allah s.w.t, the Most Merciful mentioned in the Quran four times specifically in Surah Al-Qamar, that He had made it easy for us to recite and comprehend, to remind mankind that regardless of who we are, we are constantly in need of reminders from Him.
