حَدَّثَنَا مُسَدَّدُ بْنُ مُسَرْهَدٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَمُوسَى بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيل الْمَعْنَى، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَا:‏‏‏‏ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ الْمُخْتَارِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ الدَّانَاجُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنِي حُضَيْنُ بْنُ الْمُنْذِرِ الرَّقَاشِيُّ هُوَ أَبُو سَاسَانَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ شَهِدْتُ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ وَأُتِيَ بِالْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُقْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَشَهِدَ عَلَيْهِ حُمْرَانُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَرَجُلٌ آخَرُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَشَهِدَ أَحَدُهُمَا أَنَّهُ رَآهُ شَرِبَهَا يَعْنِي الْخَمْرَ وَشَهِدَ الْآخَرُ أَنَّهُ رَآهُ يَتَقَيَّأُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عُثْمَانُ:‏‏‏‏ إِنَّهُ لَمْ يَتَقَيَّأْ حَتَّى شَرِبَهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ لِعَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ:‏‏‏‏ أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِلْحَسَنِ:‏‏‏‏ أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ الْحَسَنُ:‏‏‏‏ وَلِّ حَارَّهَا مَنْ تَوَلَّى قَارَّهَا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقَالَ عَلِيٌّ لِعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَعْفَرٍ:‏‏‏‏ أَقِمْ عَلَيْهِ الْحَدَّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ فَأَخَذَ السَّوْطَ فَجَلَدَهُ وَعَلِيٌّ يَعُدُّ فَلَمَّا بَلَغَ أَرْبَعِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ حَسْبُكَ جَلَدَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَرْبَعِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏أَحْسَبُهُ قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ وَجَلَدَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ أَرْبَعِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَعُمَرُ ثَمَانِينَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَكُلٌّ سُنَّةٌ وَهَذَا أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ .

Urdu Translation

حضین بن منذر رقاشی ابوساسان کہتے ہیں کہ   میں عثمان بن عفان رضی اللہ عنہ کے پاس موجود تھا کہ ولید بن عقبہ کو ان کے پاس لایا گیا، اور حمران اور ایک اور شخص نے اس کے خلاف گواہی دی، ان میں سے ایک نے گواہی دی کہ اس نے شراب پی ہے، اور دوسرے نے گواہی دی کہ میں نے اسے ( شراب ) قے کرتے دیکھا ہے، تو عثمان نے کہا: جب تک پیئے گا نہیں قے نہیں کر سکتا، پھر انہوں نے علی رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہا: تم اس پر حد قائم کرو، تو علی نے حسن رضی اللہ عنہ سے کہا: تم اس پر حد قائم کرو، تو حسن نے کہا: جو خلافت کی آسانیوں اور خیرات کا ذمہ دار رہا ہے وہی اس کی سختیوں اور برائیوں کا بھی ذمہ دار ہے، پھر علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے عبداللہ بن جعفر سے کہا: تم اس پر حد قائم کرو، تو انہوں نے کوڑا لے کر اسے مارنا شروع کیا، اور علی رضی اللہ عنہ گننے لگے، تو جب چالیس کوڑے ہوئے تو علی رضی اللہ عنہ نے کہا: بس کافی ہے، اس لیے کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے چالیس کوڑے ہی مارے ہیں، اور میرا خیال ہے انہوں نے یہ بھی کہا کہ ابوبکر رضی اللہ عنہ نے بھی چالیس کوڑے مارے ہیں، اور عمر رضی اللہ عنہ نے اسی، اور سب سنت ہے، اور یہ چالیس کوڑے مجھے زیادہ پسند ہیں۔

English Translation

Hudayn ibn al-Mundhir ar-Ruqashi, who was Abu Sasan, said: I was present with Uthman ibn Affan when al-Walid ibn Uqbah was brought to him. HUmran and another man bore witness against him (for drinking wine). One of them testified that he had seen him drinking wine, and the other testified that he had seen him vomiting it. Uthman said: He could not vomit it, unless he did not drink it. He said to Ali: Inflict the prescribed punishment on him. Ali said to al-Hasan: Inflict the prescribed punishment on him. Al-Hasan said: He who has enjoyed its pleasure should also bear its burden. So Ali said to Abdullah ibn Jafar: Inflict the prescribed punishment on him. He took a whip and struck him with it while Ali was counting. When he reached (struck) forty (lashes), he said: It is sufficient. The Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم gave forty lashes. I think he also said: And Abu Bakr gave forty lashes, and Uthman eighty. This is all sunnah (standard practice). And this is dearer to me.
