Steven Michael Davies was born 17 June 1986 in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire. He is an English cricketer, a wicket-keeper/batsman who currently plays for Surrey. A stylish and aggressive left-handed batsman who can open the batting in both first-class and limited-overs cricket (though in the former he generally now bats in the middle order), he is also a regular and natural wicket-keeper. Steven Davies is one of the glut of young wicketkeeper batsman vying for a spot at international level and was picked out before he'd turned 20 as one for the future. It was clear he had talent when he finished above Graeme Hick in the Worcestershire averages in his debut season in 2005, and he was selected for the National Academy and toured the West Indies with England A that winter. In 2006 he scored 192 and topped 1000 runs as his name continued to earn column inches. A former England Under-19 captain, Davies has impressed everyone who has come across him and, vitally, his glovework is also of an excellent standard. However, the selectors were careful not to make the same mistakes with Davies as they made with Chris Read and James Foster in picking him too early. It was in the limited-overs game where he really began to advance and in 2008 enjoyed a prolific Pro40 season as an opening batsman.
