Born on January 30, 1957 in Fairport, New York, Jansing studied broadcast journalism at Syracuse University, graduating in 1978. She started her career in radio before transitioning to television news, spending seventeen years at WNYT in Albany, New York where she won a New York Emmy Award. 

She joined NBC News in 1998, going on to cover White House politics, presidential elections and international events including a stint as NBC's Senior White House Correspondent.
