Major served as a New York State Senator from 1975 to 1982, and as a U.S. House Representative for New York from 1983 to 2007; he passed away in 2013. Owens also had two brothers, politician Chris and activist Millard. He attended the High School of Performing Arts in Manhattan for a year, which also trained performers like Eartha Kitt and Liza Minnelli. Owens graduated from Yale University in 1983, cum laude. Owens began his career on the stage, developing an affinity for Shakespeare, which led him to found and direct The Brooklyn Shakespeare Company, as well as perform and teach the subject at institutions like Columbia and Yale.
