Actress Jenifer Lewis was born on January 25, 1957, in Kinloch, Missouri, to Dorothy Mae Lewis, a nursing aide, and Edward James Lewis, a factory worker. She graduated from Kinloch High School in 1975 and received her B.A. degree in theater arts from Webster University in Webster Groves, Missouri in 1979.

Lewis has appeared in a range of leading and character roles for film, television, and the stage across more than four decades. Lewis made her Broadway debut in 1979 in the musical Eubie! In the early 1980s, she performed as a backup vocalist for Bette Midler and appeared in numerous televised specials. Lewis also played the role of Effie White in the workshop production of Dreamgirls, directed by Michael Bennett.
