John Hickenlooper is an American politician, businessman, and former geologist who has been a U.S. Senator from Colorado since 2021. Hickenlooper was born in Narberth, Pennsylvania, on February 7, 1952, and attended Wesleyan University before starting his career in geology. He was laid off when the recession hit in the 1980s and turned to entrepreneurship, opening Wynkoop Brewing Company, one of the early brewpubs in Colorado. As a result of his success in business, he became involved in public service and in 2003 was elected mayor of Denver. Hickenlooper went on to become Colorado's governor from 2011 to 2019, before being elected to the U.S Senate. His career has focused on economic development, infrastructure, health and environmental issues. His unusual path from geologist and businessman to mayor, governor and senator has carved out a niche for him in Colorado politics.
