Karl Deisseroth is an American neuroscientist, psychiatrist, and bioengineer born on November 18, 1971, in Boston. He is the D.H. Chen Professor of Bioengineering and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. His research helped establish optogenetics, a method using light-sensitive proteins to control selected nerve cells. Deisseroth also works as a psychiatrist and published Projections: A Story of Human Emotions in 2021.
