Personal Profile About Khalid Sheikh
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed is a Kuwaiti-born Pakistani national and high-ranking member of al Qaeda, who is believed to have been the lead operational planner behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the United States. He had the concept of using hijacked aircraft as weapons and collaborated with Osama bin Laden and other members of al-Qaeda to design and implement the plan, according to the U.S. Department of Justice indictment.
He was also connected to earlier terrorist attacks, such as the planning of the bombing of the World Trade Centre in 1993, the 1995 plot on a Manila airliner and other planned attacks on American interests. In 2003 he was captured in Pakistan, and subsequently moved to Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, where he has been held.
Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other accused are set to be charged in a U.S. military commission for their alleged involvement in the 9/11 attacks in the United States that killed nearly 3,000 people. The case has been protracted and the evidence and treatment he received while in CIA custody has been a subject of controversy.
