Nidal Hasan was born in Arlington County, Virginia, to Palestinian immigrant parents and grew up in the Roanoke area. He graduated from Virginia Tech in 1995 and earned his medical degree in 2003. He trained as an Army psychiatrist at Walter Reed Army Medical Center before moving to Fort Hood, Texas, in 2009. On November 5, 2009, Hasan opened fire at a military processing center, killing 13 people and shooting and wounding 31 others. A military court convicted him of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in August 2013. The additional attempted murder count involved a police officer who escaped injury. Hasan received a death sentence.
