Parveen Shakir was a Pakistani poetess. She was also a teacher and civil servant. She was known for bringing personal emotion and women’s perspectives into Urdu ghazal and free verse. She wrote mainly in Urdu and became one of the most read poets of her time. She also taught English literature at Trinity College Karachi and the University of Karachi.
She held master’s degrees in English Literature and Linguistics, a master’s degree in Bank Administration, and a PhD in English Literature on American poetesses. She joined the Pakistan Customs Service in 1975, reaching the rank of second secretary. In 1990, she received the Pride of Performance.
The Parveen Shakir biography states that she was born on November 24, 1952, in Karachi. Her prominent writings were Khushbu, Sad-barg, Khud-kalaami, Inkaar, Maah-e-Tamaam, and Kaf-e-Aa'ina. She died on December 26, 1994, at the age of 42 in a car accident in Islamabad.
