Penny Wong is an Australian Labor Party politician who has represented South Australia in the Senate since July 2002. She was born in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, on November 5, 1968. Her family moved to Australia in 1976, when she was eight, and settled in Adelaide. Wong studied arts and law at the University of Adelaide before working as an industrial officer, senior policy adviser, barrister and solicitor, and legal officer. She was elected to the Senate in 2001 and entered the federal ministry after Labor won the 2007 election.
Her previous roles include Minister for Climate Change and Water and Minister for Finance and Deregulation. In 2013, she became the first woman to serve as Leader of the Government in the Senate and later the first woman to serve as Leader of the Opposition in the Senate. Wong became Minister for Foreign Affairs in May 2022 and also serves as Leader of the Government in the Senate.
