Ram Vanji Sutar was an Indian sculptor and artist. The Ram Sutar biography tells that he was a pioneer in large-scale bronze memorials and transformed Indian monumental art. Ram received many awards for his work, including the Padma Shri in 1999, the Padma Bhushan in 2016, the Tagore Award for Cultural Harmony in 2016, and the Maharashtra Bhushan in 2024.
He was a gold medalist from Sir J.J. School of Art and Architecture in Mumbai. Ram Sutar most famous work is the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue at 182 meters, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. He also created statues of Mahatma Gandhi, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, Kempe Gowda, and many others.

Ram Sutar passed away on December 17, 2025 at the age of 100 years, at his residence in Noida, India. His death was due to age related illnesses and was described as peaceful. His funeral rites were held on December 18, 2025, at 11:00 AM in Noida. Leaders including PM Narendra Modi, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, and Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis offered condolences.
