Shashi Tharoor is an Indian politician, author, and former diplomat. He has been a Member of Parliament from Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, since 2009. From 1978 to 2007, he worked at the United Nations, becoming Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information in 2001. He also ran for the post of UN Secretary-General in 2006 and came second.

Tharoor served as Minister of State for External Affairs with the Indian National Congress (INC) under the Manmohan Singh government. He also founded the All India Professionals Congress and chaired the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications and Information Technology.
