Sonam Wangchuk is an Indian engineer, inventor, educator, and civil rights activist from Ladakh. He is the founder and current director of Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), and founder of the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). All through his career, he has worked towards improvement of education in Ladakh by promoting practical learning over rote learning. Along with his innovative projects, he has also tried to resolve some of the environmental problems such as the water crisis and climate change in the Himalayan region.
Sonam Wangchuk Ends Hunger Strike
Sonam Wangchuk ends hunger strike on July 23, 2026, night after 26 days. He broke his fast at Medanta Hospital in Gurugram in the presence of his wife, Gitanjali, and Union Ministers JP Nadda and Jitendra Singh. Doctors had raised serious concerns about his health during the final days of the fast.
Wangchuk began the strike on June 28 at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi to protest alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination. He also demanded the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
