She is perhaps most famous as the bassist and co-founder of the seminal rock group Talking Heads. She studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, where she met her future husband and bandmate Chris Frantz.
Weymouth, along with David Byrne and Chris Frantz, was a founding member of Talking Heads in 1975. Her distinctive bass lines were central to the band’s pioneering blend of rock, funk and world music influences. In 1981, she also formed the funk and dance-rock group Tom Tom Club with Frantz. The duo scored international hits with songs such as "Genius of Love."

In 2002, Weymouth was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Talking Heads. She is regarded as one of the most prominent women bass guitarists in the history of rock music.
