حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَحُمَيْدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الرُّوَاسِيُّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ مُغِيرَةَ بْنِ زِيَادٍ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ نُسَيٍّ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ ثَعْلَبَةَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ عَلَّمْتُ نَاسًا مِنْ أَهْلِ الصُّفَّةِ الْكِتَابَ وَالْقُرْآنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَهْدَى إِلَيَّ رَجُلٌ مِنْهُمْ قَوْسًا، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ لَيْسَتْ بِمَالٍ وَأَرْمِي عَنْهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ لَآتِيَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَلَأَسْأَلَنَّهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَأَتَيْتُهُ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏فَقُلْتُ:‏‏‏‏ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏رَجُلٌ أَهْدَى إِلَيَّ قَوْسًا مِمَّنْ كُنْتُ أُعَلِّمُهُ الْكِتَابَ وَالْقُرْآنَ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏وَلَيْسَتْ بِمَالٍ وَأَرْمِي عَنْهَا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ، ‏‏‏‏‏‏قَالَ:‏‏‏‏ إِنْ كُنْتَ تُحِبُّ أَنْ تُطَوَّقَ طَوْقًا مِنْ نَارٍ فَاقْبَلْهَا .

Urdu Translation

عبادہ بن صامت رضی اللہ عنہ کہتے ہیں کہ   میں نے اصحاب صفہ کے کچھ لوگوں کو قرآن پڑھنا اور لکھنا سکھایا تو ان میں سے ایک نے مجھے ایک کمان ہدیتہً دی، میں نے ( جی میں ) کہا یہ کوئی مال تو ہے نہیں، اس سے میں فی سبیل اللہ تیر اندازی کا کام لوں گا ( پھر بھی ) میں رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس جاؤں گا اور آپ سے اس بارے میں پوچھوں گا، تو میں آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کے پاس آیا اور عرض کیا: اللہ کے رسول! میں جن لوگوں کو قرآن پڑھنا لکھنا سکھا رہا تھا، ان میں سے ایک شخص نے مجھے ہدیہ میں ایک کمان دی ہے، اور اس کی کچھ مالیت تو ہے نہیں، میں اس سے اللہ کی راہ میں جہاد کروں گا، رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا: اگر تمہیں پسند ہو کہ تمہیں آگ کا طوق پہنایا جائے تو اس کمان کو قبول کر لو ۱؎ ۔

English Translation

Narrated Ubaydah ibn as-Samit: I taught some persons of the people of Suffah writing and the Quran. A man of them presented to me a bow. I said: It cannot be reckoned property; may I shoot with it in Allah's path? I must come to the Messenger of of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم and ask him (about it). So I came to him and said: Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم, one of those whom I have been teaching writing and the Quran has presented me a bow, and as it cannot be reckoned property, may I shoot with it in Allah's path? He said: If you want to have a necklace of fire on you, accept it.
