Artist with the world at his fingertips

They are the sort of thing that would make any elf home and garden complete.

But these amazing minuscule replicas of everyday objects were not built by pixies but by human hand and are the creation of Dmitry Okhotsky.

The Latvian artist spends months carving his extraordinary models out of broken gadgets and rubbish and incredibly they work in just the same way as their traditionally sized counterparts.

Tiny scissors are able to cut through paper and a small vice is able to squeeze an object just like the real-life machine would in a workshop.

With a steady hand and an even steadier patience, each sculpture is carefully carved using specially adapted tools such as a tiny metal hand saw, minute files and drills.

Mr Okhotsky uses everything from bolts, nails, cans, radio components, wooden rulers, ice-cream sticks and other items that people usually throw in the rubbish to make his creations.

From scissors to a sharp axe, the models are just a fraction of the size of the items they are based on but all have the exact same working qualities.

The artist, from Jurmala, said: 'I started sculpting early in my childhood and as long as I can remember myself I've been doing something with my hands.

'Whether it was drawing, modelling with plasticine, making figures of paper I was always busy doing something like that.

'Later I got interested in crafting different things from wood - and even now wood is my favourite material.

'I like to visit historical and war museums and especially like the small exhibits like tanks.

'It's hard to remember what the first one was but the first one I thought was good was a model of a guitar five times smaller than the original.

'Next I want to make a tiny home for all my objects with everything from a garage, workshop, garden and so on.

'Often during making one thing new ideas occur to me and I start to make another one - each can take a couple of months.

'The longest work I have done so far is the vice. From the idea and planning to finishing it, it took a year and half.

'Although with my two young daughters Irina and Maria running across my house and 'trying to help' me it's sometimes impossible to make much progress.

'All of my creations are exclusive and made without copies. They all work and that's the main target to make the working copy - so the scissors cut and the vice tighten.'
