These stunning photographs have been compiled by editors at National
Geographic magazine for its famous Nature Photographer of the Year
competition. The publication is seeking out 'spectacular' pictures
showing animals, lands and environments around the globe. Among the
editors' picks so far are a sublime shot showing a tidal pool in Norway,
a mother bear and her cub walking together through water and a macaque
receiving a head massage in Japan. The winner of the competition - which
is open until November 12 at 12pm - receives a £5,500 prize. To enter,

Enchanted: A tidal pool at Lofoten Islands in northern Norway acts as
natural eye catcher. With the high tides around full moon, white sand
gets washed into the pool and then the magic unfolds

A Mother Bear and Cub: Photographer Anat
Gutman said of this stunning picture: 'The three-months cub was so cute
I almost dropped the camera and [ran] to hug him. Almost. Mother bear
(huge female) was looking at me suspiciously'

Lust: This photograph was taken in the cold waters of Whyalla, South
Australia during the annual Australian giant cuttlefish aggregation. The
event features hundreds of thousands of cuttlefish on the lookout to
find a mate. It is the only place where they are known to aggregate in
such large numbers. Mating can be aggressive, with males usually
dominating the females by 10 to one. Pictured: A larger male showing his

Birds and Shadows: Csaba DarÛczi was on his way home in the morning when
he saw a gaggle of geese. Naturally, he immediately assembled his drone
and managed to get this fantastic shot

Tadami Line: This railway connects Fukushima and Niigata in Japan. It is
a single-track, non-electrified local line that runs through the serene
countryside. The train goes over a number of bridges and passes
beautiful cherry blossoms in spring, greenery in summer, coloured leaves
in autumn, and snow in winter

Macaque Maintenance: This little monkey enjoys a head massage at the
Jigokudani snow monkey park in Japan. The reserve has become a major
tourist hot spot, attracting visitors from all over the world hoping to
get a glimpse of these fascinating creatures huddled together in hot
springs

Infinite Road to Transylvania: This photograph was taken in Cheia, which
is in Transylvania, Romania. The impressively winding road was occupied
by only a handful of vehicles

Coorg Yellow Bush Frog: This chummy little amphibian was photographed in
the rainforests of Agumbe, Karnataka, in the southwest of India. The
frog was formerly known as the blue-eyed bush due to the stunning blue
ring around its golden eye

Mackenzie Mountains: This stunning image shows rich colours fading into
the grey ruggedness of the famous mountain range in Canada. It was taken
near the Nááts'ihch'oh National Park Reserve
