Dastak Na Do Novel Theme

The story deals with family relationships, class differences, gender expectations, alienation, migration, cultural identity, and the social changes surrounding Partition. Gaythi belongs to a wealthy Muslim family in pre-Partition India. Her independent nature clashes with the behaviour expected from a young woman of her social position. She mixes with people from different backgrounds and resists many of the restrictions placed on her. Another major part of the story is Gaythi's friendship with Liu Chu, a Chinese Muslim whose Muslim name is Safdar Yaseen. He lives far from China and works as a travelling seller. He misses his homeland and never fully feels at home where he lives. Gaythi and Liu Chu are both Muslim, but class, race, and cultural differences change the way others see their friendship. Lao-Tzu's philosophy also appears in the story. Liu Chu and his friendship with Gaythi bring different cultures into contact with each other. Partition later changes the lives of the characters as families lose their homes, relationships are affected, and new responsibilities appear.

Dastak Na Do Novel Summary

Gaythi is a lively and rebellious girl from a wealthy Muslim family living in India before Partition. Her family expects her to behave with restraint and prepare for traditional roles as a wife and mother. Gaythi has a different temperament. She rides her bicycle freely, mixes with people outside her social class, and openly expresses herself even when her behaviour brings criticism from her family.

As a young girl, Gaythi befriends Liu Chu, a Chinese Muslim who uses the name Safdar Yaseen. He earns his living by selling household goods while living away from his homeland. When Gaythi falls from a tree and breaks her leg, Liu Chu helps her. Her family does not treat him with the same respect Gaythi does, but the friendship continues. Gaythi has to deal with rules placed on her by her family and society. Liu Chu has his own difficulties as someone living far from China and feeling out of place in another culture.

Political events begin changing Gaythi's life as well. Problems within the family and Partition take away the security she once had. She goes into exile and later has to look after herself and her strong-willed mother. Gaythi’s family troubles and her friendship with Liu Chu are also shaped by the changes around them. Social divisions, migration, separation, and displacement all affect their lives during this period of political change.
