About the Author
Shaheena Chanda Mehtab was a Pakistani Urdu novelist who wrote social and romantic fiction for digest readers. She died on October 29, 2020, at the age of 58. Her stories often examine relationships, social restrictions, family conflict, and the difficulties women face when making personal choices.
Her other published works include Choona Nahi, Saba, Thakan, Awara, Mohabbat, Seemi, Khubsurat Faisla, Ek Bar Muskura Do, and Mohabbat Isko Kehte Hain. She wrote both novels and short-story collections. Her work appeared in Urdu digests. The Jaan novel by Shaheena Chanda Mehtab was published in digest form before appearing as a complete book.
Jaan Novel Theme
The Jaan novel is a social-romantic story with elements of tragedy. Jaan literally means “life” or “soul” in Urdu. It is also a term of endearment for someone deeply loved. In the story, the title reflects the emotional importance of love and the personal cost of holding on to it.

Jaan Novel Summary
After losing her father, Ayesha lives with her mother and faces further hardship after the breakdown of her previous marriages. Her experiences leave her reluctant to trust another relationship. She worries about becoming a source of difficulty for the people close to her
Major Shadab falls in love with Ayesha despite being 11 years younger. He relentlessly pursues her to marry her and restore her faith in love and companionship. Ayesha keeps rejecting Shadab’s marriage proposal because she is hurt by her past and fears what her family and society will think. However Shadab does not give up, which finally helps Ayesha face her fears and agree to marry again.
