Wapda Green Meter

WAPDA Green Meter is a new initiative of the Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), which is introduced to make Pakistan greener by encouraging the export of solar energy to the national grid and allowing the WAPDA consumers to cut their electricity costs. You can find all the information about WAPDA green meter policies, billing structure, prices, or application-related details here to make your green meter adoption easier.

What is WAPDA Green Meter?

The WAPDA Green Meter, in the context of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), is part of Pakistan’s net metering system through which residential and commercial consumers can sell excess electricity generated from their solar panels back to the national grid. These are the benefits of this setup:

  • Saves a crucial national energy resource
  • Helps reduce energy costs on both individual and national levels
  • Generates a source of income for solar-adopted households
  • Supports and encourages the use of renewable energy sources.

WAPDA Green Meter Policy

NEPRA governs the WAPDA green meter policy under the Net Metering Regulations (SRO 892(1) 2015). This policy defines the requirements for applicants, the green meter adoption process, the billing structure, and consumer rights for those who wish to export extra electricity to the grid via their solar energy systems.

Usually, the agreement between the consumer and DISCO for WAPDA Green Meter adoption is valid for three years. The agreement can be renewed later. Policies are important because they may impact eligibility conditions, energy credit rates, and procedural timelines.

WAPDA Green Meter Unit Price

The green meter WAPDA unit price depends on the region, electricity usage, timings (peak or off-peak hours), and updated NEPRA tariffs. It is important to note that the consumption is charged more, and exported solar energy generates fewer credits per unit during peak hours. Currently these are WAPDA green meter unit prices:

  • Off-Peak Hours: Rs. 14 per unit
  • Peak Hours: Rs. 24.33 per unit

WAPDA Green Meter Bill

The bill is calculated by adjusting the amount imported and exported to the grid by the consumer. Here is the simple WAPDA green meter bill calculation pattern explained with an example:

  • During off-peak hours, consume 50 units from the grid and export 300 units to get credits for 250 units to be adjusted with the peak hours bill.
  • During peak hours, consume 100 units from the grid—no energy generated from solar or exported to the grid—and get charged for 100 units.
  • Net bill: Off-peak hour credits (250 units) - Peak hour charges (100 units) = 150 units will be the amount payable by the consumer.

Green Meter WAPDA Requirement

The first step to be eligible for the net metering is to meet the Green Meter WAPDA requirement. Following are the main requirements if you want to apply for this system:

  • An active WAPDA connection with billing history
  • Installed solar system with more capacity than monthly usage
  • Application prepared according to NEPRA guidelines
  • Inspection and No Objection Certificate (NOC)
  • Signed agreement with the DISCO
  • Generation license from NEPRA

Green Meter WAPDA Application Form

If you are interested in a net metering system and looking for the Green Meter WAPDA application form, then follow this method:

  • Have an active electricity connection to the relevant DISCO.
  • Install a solar system that has more capacity than your monthly electricity usage.
  • Contact any AEDB-registered solar company for assistance with your application, necessary documents, and further steps.

Green Meter WAPDA Fee

The Green Meter WAPDA fee varies depending on the region and system size. These are the components that are considered in calculating the WAPDA fee:

  • Demand notice charges from DISCO
  • Cost of meter installation
  • Processing or application handling fees (if using a solar provider)

The amount paid initially as the WAPDA fee is very small compared to the long-term financial benefit of this system. You can reduce your electricity cost in the long term or even eliminate monthly bills if you consume energy efficiently.
