Altaf Hussain is a British Pakistani political leader and the founder of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM). He has been living in the United Kingdom in self-exile since 1992. He continues to be known as a major figure for the party’s supporters, who often call him Pir Sahib, Quaid-e-Tehrik, Rahbar, or Altaf Bhai.
The Altaf Hussain biography tells that he was born on 17 September 1953 in Karachi. His political work began in 1978 when he founded the All Pakistan Muhajir Students Organisation (APMSO) at Karachi University to represent the Urdu-speaking/Muhajir student community. In 1984, APMSO grew into a full political party called the Mohajir Qaumi Movement (MQM), later renamed Muttahida Qaumi Movement in 1997 to broaden its appeal to represent all communities in Pakistan. Under his leadership, MQM performed strongly in the 1988 and 1990 general elections.
