Models Who Defined Different Eras of Pakistani Fashion
Several names stand out because of their runway careers, fashion campaigns, awards, and the amount of time they remained part of the industry.
Vaneeza Ahmad
Vaneeza Ahmad, also known as Vinnie, was one of the early names who became widely known through Pakistani fashion. She spent more than a decade in modelling and appeared in magazines, on billboards, and at major fashion shows.
Her work later moved into the business side of fashion. She started V Lawn after spending years modelling lawn campaigns for brands such as Gul Ahmed and Al-Karam. By 2011, she had already spent six years in fashion design. Vaneeza also worked with Style360 and later directed the Lux Style Awards in 2018.
Iman Ali
Iman Ali was already a known fashion model before she moved into films. She worked with Pakistani designers and also modelled for Indian names including Manish Malhotra, JJ Valaya, and Suneet Varma.
Her move into acting came with Shoaib Mansoor's Khuda Kay Liye in 2007. The film became a major success, and Iman won the Lux Style Award for Best Actress for her performance. She later appeared in Bol and Mah-e-Meer. Her earlier modelling work had already made her one of the familiar faces of Pakistani fashion before her film career started.
Mehreen Syed
Mehreen Syed started modelling at 18 while studying and working to support her family. She stayed at the top of the runway for more than a decade and became a regular showstopper for major designers.
She won the Lux Style Award for Model of the Year Female in 2013. Mehreen also worked as a spokesperson for L'Oréal Paris Pakistan, while designer HSY has called her his muse. In 2011, she started the International Fashion Academy Pakistan, where training was offered in modelling, makeup, grooming, and photography.
Nadia Hussain
Nadia Hussain managed a modelling career alongside her education in dentistry and later became one of the regular faces of Pakistani fashion. She worked on runways, magazine shoots, campaigns, and fashion shows for years.
Her work did not stay limited to modelling. Nadia moved into acting and business, with ventures in shoes, lawn, prêt wear, and beauty services. She later opened the Nadia Hussain Salon and Clinic. This kept her connected with fashion and beauty even when modelling was no longer the only part of her career.
Sadaf Kanwal
Sadaf Kanwal became one of the main modelling names of the 2010s. She was already appearing in fashion shows and magazine shoots when she won Best Emerging Talent in Fashion at the Lux Style Awards in 2015.
Two years later, Sadaf won Model of the Year Female at the 2017 Lux Style Awards. Her runway work, bridal campaigns, and fashion shoots kept her among the most visible models of that period. She later moved into acting and appeared in the 2017 film Balu Mahi.
Amna Ilyas
Amna Ilyas became known for her runway work and fashion shoots during the early 2010s. She received repeated recognition in fashion awards before winning the Lux Style Award for Best Female Model in 2015.
Her acceptance speech also received attention because she spoke about the criticism she had faced over her darker skin tone when she entered modelling. Amna had already moved into film by then, appearing in Zinda Bhaag in 2013. She continued working in both modelling and acting, becoming one of the recognised fashion faces of her generation.
Cybil Chowdhry
Cybil Chowdhry was another major runway name during the 2000s and 2010s. Her work regularly placed her among the models competing for Pakistan's main fashion awards.
She won Model of the Year Female at the Lux Style Awards held in 2014. The following year, she also received the Best Model Female award at the Hum Awards. Cybil continued appearing in designer shows and fashion campaigns during a period when Pakistan's fashion weeks and bridal shows were getting more public attention. Her repeated nominations and awards placed her among the leading models of that time.
