His political career began in 1985 when he was elected to the National Assembly on a non-party basis from NA-83 Lahore-III. In 1990, he was elected to the Punjab Provincial Assembly from PP-118 Lahore-III as an IJI candidate. He later remained associated with the PPP and other political alliances before joining the PML (N) around 2008.
