Economic Crises in Pakistan and Government Luxurious Expenditures
(Sarfaraz Ibrahim, Karachi)
Pakistan 2008 Corruption
Perceptions Index Score is 2.5. Out of 180 countries, it is ranked as the 46th
most corrupt country in the world. Corruption jumps 400% in Pakistan in 3 years
ICC T 20 World Cup 2009 Corruption in Pakistan has surged by whopping 400
percent in the last 3 years, said National Corruption Perception Survey 2009
carried out by Transparency International. The National Corruption Perception
Survey 2009 (NCPS 2009) indicates that the overall Corruption in 2002 has
increased from Rs 45 Billion to Rs 195 Billion in 2009. Police and Power
maintained their ranking as the top two most corrupt sectors. Major Findings of
Pakistan National Corruption Perception Survey 2009 are: Police, Power, Health
and Land are the most corrupt departments, and Judiciary, Customs & Taxation
have improved their ranking since 2006.
Today on June 21, 2009, Pakistan won ICC T 20 Cricket World Cup 2009. Crazy
about cricket, these are great moments of glory for Pakistani nation. It shows
that Pakistani nation has talent to overcome uphill tasks but often talent is
misused. Till the years 2000 I was also crazy about Pakistan and Pakistani
cricket team. I enjoyed every moment since the year 1987 to 1992 till the year
2000. Finally, I faced great deprivations in my career. At that time I realized
that I am fool who is dying for my country who offered me no hope and career.
Now I have realized that super rich cricket game is not a proper match for
Pakistani nation in a miserable condition.
Amazingly, the government did not reduce its expenditures. Employees have big
cars, vehicles and bungalows. There are huge number of luxurious government
homes and cars. Few previous governments took abstinent economic measures in the
past. Last few governments did not curtail their lavish spending. Instead
government is planning to increase government employees’ salary. Government
employees especially officers are among most prosperous sector of society in
Pakistan. Pakistani government has huge number of government employees. Such
measure will increase inflation. It is an appeasement measure since government
employees are powerful sector in Pakistan.
Pakistan turned to many countries for taking loan but no one helped. Even
Friends of Pakistan (FoP) refused direct help. IMF is the only remaining option.
Friends of Pakistan made it compulsory for Pakistan to seek IMF package so that
it could monitor utilization of its own loan as well as their aid effectively in
Pakistan. A $7.5 billion bailout package is expected from IMF along with around
$4 billion financial assistance from international financial institutions like
World Bank, Asian Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank and Department for
International Development (DFID) of United Kingdom. Aid in the shape of
commodities and fertilizer, export market access and oil could form the aid
package from the Friends of Pakistan, the sources added. Interestingly, world
nations behaved in a similar fashion as Pakistani government respond to the
requests of its own people. Pakistani government never give loan neither it
respond to anyone’s persistent requests or financial plight. There are no
financial help available in Pakistan for those civilians who are facing crises
due to bad economy or corruption. My case is well known example in the world.
