Selfie culture

(Bisma Abdul Latif, karachi)

The world has changed into a global village. There is a lot more advancement in technology than before. Selfies have become a huge trend in social media. Nowadays, it can easily be seen that everyone is busy taking selfies. Whether they are with family or friends, at restaurants or at family gatherings, they do not bother to talk. It can be seen that a person sitting next to the other is more interested in taking selfies than talking to the other no matter after how long they have met. The respect and the value of relations have become weaker.

have personally seen this increasing trend among my own friends. They take several selfies over and over again until they find the right one. Picking out details about their eyebrows, skin, noses, smiles, teeth, hair and so forth, all in an attempt to find the perfect angles to make the perfect picture. They even remain curious about the selection of their profile pictures on Facebook and other social media sites, which is a time consuming process. Believe it or not, as harmless as these acts all seem, they build up over time to create great forms of self-consciousness and a false sense of confidence. Instead of being okay with who we are no matter what, we strive to find the right picture with all the perfect details.

We can say that the selfie craze is a mental disorder. It is not an abnormal act to take a selfie but the act of taking selfies all the time is an abnormal activity. The excess of everything leads to addiction and can cause problems. Not only our youth are suffering from this disorder, I have seen many people in their middle and old age who remain anxious to capture and post their selfies on the internet. Although it is good to move with technology, yet it should be used moderately.
