(Erfa Rizvan, Karachi)
Foreign policy is the mechanism national governments use to guide their diplomatic interactions and relations with other countries. Foreign policy is designed to protect and promote the national interest abroad. As a new emerged country on the world map in 1947, Pakistan also had to design its foreign policy in order to built hostile and friendly relations with super powers and other countries.
Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the Founder of Pakistan and its first Governor General, in a broadcast talk to the people of the USA in February
1948, outlined the following goals of Pakistan’s foreign policy:
“Our foreign policy is one of friendliness and goodwill towards all the nations of the world. We do not cherish aggressive designs against any country or nation. We believe in the principle of honesty and fair play in national and international dealings and are prepared to make our utmost contribution to the promotion of peace and prosperity among the nations of the world. Pakistan will never be found lacking in extending its material and moral support to the oppressed and suppressed peoples of the world, and in upholding the principles of the United Nations Charter.”
Our foreign policy was developed by keeping some objectives and goals in mind which were:
· Promotion of Pakistan as a dynamic, progressive, moderate, and democratic Islamic country.
· Developing friendly relations with all countries of the world, especially major powers and immediate neighbors.
· Promotion of Pakistan as a dynamic, progressive, moderate, and democratic Islamic country.
· Developing friendly relations with all countries of the world, especially major powers and immediate neighbors.
· Safeguarding the interests of Pakistani Diaspora abroad.
· Ensuring optimal utilization of national resources for regional and international cooperation. etc
Due to the unique geographical location of Pakistan, it had to keep friendly relations with almost all the neighbors and super powers especially USA.
Pak-China relations became strong day by day that China started to support Pakistan economically and strategically. In fact, China started a project CPEC in Pakistan to connect Pakistan and China by road. China will use the sea routes to connect to Middle East and Central Asia for trading purposes.
Pakistan has been supported by USA economically, politically and strategically. Many weapons are supplied by USA in order to strengthen Pakistan's defense system against its enemies.
Moreover, Pakistan possess friendly relations with the muslim block. It is said that Pakistan is the leader of muslim block. It has also lead the OIC conference.
Likewise, Pakistan import oil from muslim countries like Saudia Arabia.
Thus, unique location of Pakistan has bounded to keep friendly relations with all the neighboring countries and super powers. It cannot get tilted to one side.
