Inferiority Complex and Ways to Heal it

(Syeda Khair-ul-Bariyah, Lahore)

An inferiority complex is a psychological state which makes a person feel inferior and less important than others. Gradually, it affects a person’s confidence, making them unaware of their abilities. Consequently, they may find it difficult to enjoy life at its fullest. This condition requires timely attention; else, it may lead to frustration, depression, and social isolation.
Strong criticism from an early age, fear of failure, doubts about physical appearance, and social media success stories that make one feel less are a few of the many contributing factors to inferiority complex. Sometimes, because of a few perceived weaknesses, a person overlooks their overall personality and strengths. This not only deprives a person of mental peace but also affects their practical life. Such individuals fear new opportunities, feel reluctant to express their opinions, struggle with decision-making, and often seek approval before making decisions. As a result, they may never reach their desired goals, even though they can achieve them.
It is possible to overcome an inferiority complex. The first step is to accept yourself. Everyone is unique, with both strengths and weaknesses. Make a list of your strengths, remember your small achievements, and take pride in them. Instead of comparing yourself with others, strive to become a better version of yourself than you were yesterday.
Positive thinking is of immense importance in this mental state. Encouraging thoughts should take the place of negative thoughts. Prioritize surrounding yourself with encouraging and support individuals rather than those who let you down. Likewise, consistently taking small steps toward your goals can increase your self-confidence. This includes learning new skills, reading and adopting healthy habits. In case the severity increases, then seeking guidance from a psychologist is the right choice and is a sign of awareness.
Allah Almighty has gifted every human being valuable abilities, and every individual is given certain purpose. The Holy Qur'an states:
"And We have certainly honoured the children of Adam."
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:70)
This verse clearly explains that every human being is honoured.
An inferiority complex is a chain hindering a person's progress. One can overcome it through a positive mindset, confidence, a healthy lifestyle, and trust in Allah Almighty. When a person realizes their own worth, they not only make effective use of their abilities but also live a satisfied, successful, and dignified life.
