Democracy

(Muhammad Ali, )

Democracy is the most popular form of government in the modern times. Another name of democracy is “government by consent”. it is also defined as “government of people, by the people and for the people”.

If may be of two kinds, direct and indirect. The indirect democracy is in vogue these days. It is also called the representative democracy.

Like all other systems of government it has some merits and demerits. One of its benefits is that, it works for the betterment of a common man. In it everyone is equal before law. It allows the people to change the government through vote.

On the other hand, it is said that it is not suitable for the countries like Pakistan, where the literacy late is low, because the vote of an uneducated person and the vote of a Phd. Person is equal.

Its another disadvantage is that if once a unsuitable representative is elected , then the people will have to wait for the next election to change him.

And the Islamic concept of democracy is different from modern concepts. First in Islam, the authority lies in ALLAH not in elected or selected representatives. Secondly the government is to enforce the law of Islam not to please the people.

Modern democracy can be improved if we run by following the rules of Islam. Then it can bring real change and justice in the world.
