ANARCHY IN KARACHI

(Hafiz Muhammad Noman, Karachi)

I happened to visit Sindh Secretariat on Monday afternoon in order to meet someone owing to some work. I performed Namaz-e-Zohar in Karachi Press Club (KPC) and took the way in front of the KPC’s gate to my destination. As I covered half of my distance, a motorcyclist intercepted me and asked “what area is it?” I thought he would be a new person here and inquiring about an address but after my answer, he started asking various questions to me concerning my residence, my job or work and my destination etc. he immediately got irritable and warned me to only go to your destination, threatening that he had a gun and would kill me, otherwise! He added that some of his accomplices were standing there to keep an eye on you.

The whole situation frightened me a lot and I could not do anything although the traffic on the road was flowing. To my surprise, the man asked me about money, mobile and its price, even he took my mobile in his hand and returned it threatening me again to go to your destination and go back home. It was unfathomable to me because neither he snatched my mobile nor money and just threatened and frightened me!

Since we daily listen to some news that communal disturbance is engulfing Karachi but the whole Paklistan, this incident made me think of the language discrimination. Recent and last year’s incidents engulfed or controlled my mind in which Baloch and Mohajir people kidnapped each others’ men and mutilated them throwing their bodies in gunny bags.

I started to shiver frightfully because all the incidents were visualizing in front of my eyes and on the other hand, I felt great pity that despite being the sensitive area, no policeman was found there and the man easily intercepted and threatened me! Such incidents are increasing day by day and it has become difficult for a man to go out of the house in order to earn money for his family and surely every common man is surviving under threat or fear whereas a complete state of fear and anarchy has overcome Karachi! The concerned authorities must consider this issue and take some serious initiatives to pacify the city and restore people’s trust on the law and law enforcement agencies.

Oh my Allah! Save us and save Pakistan! Bestow us knowledge and understanding and unite us firmly! Aameen!
