This is the time to do something for your country
(Rabia Abdul Ghaffar, Karachi)
For the first time in Pakistan
a transition from one democratically elected government to another is going to
take place. For the first time a democratically elected government has completed
its 5 year term. The elections that are going take place are described by many
as the most important in the country’s history. The media is independent and
very strong, with coverage of most events taking place in the country so there
will be widespread coverage of the elections, bringing exclusive reports into
people’s homes. For the first time the youth of the country is taking an active
interest in the elections, thanks in a large part to Imran Khan. After seeing
such a trend the PML-N also started to woo the youth with incentives such as
laptop etc.
Many analysts believe and common folks say that this is going to be an election
of change. Recent polls showed Imran Khan PTI as the most popular party however
the PML-N has gained some lost ground in recent days. The incumbents, the PPP
are very low in the polls with widespread disenchantment with its 5 years in
office. The people’s party and its policies during its tenure have been
criticized, with rampant corruption, power cuts, escalation of violence and
growing extremism. Along with the myriads of problems, the government has also
failed to curb terrorism. Almost every day there is a bombing somewhere in the
country. So many want the PPP out. They want to see change with a good leader as
PM.
Most parties have agreed on the election commission. However some parties have
their reservations. In fact one party has gone to the supreme court to
reconstitute the election commission. Certain members of the cabinet are voiced
their concerns about a possible conspiracy to devail the elections. The actions
of a new player on the scone, Doctor Tahir-Ul-Qadri, have caused discontent
among the civil society, although many thousands of people took part in his
sit-in in Islamabad in cold weather and rain which forced the government to
yield to his demands and make a deal with him.
Voting is every citizen’s sacred franchise. All registered voters must cast
their votes in order to bring about positive change in the country. After years
of military rule and 4 coup de-ate it’s high time democracy took root in
Pakistan. Instead of the establishment eradicating this budding flower we must
defeat them in their nefarious designs and vote for the party we think will take
Pakistan into the future. In the crucible will be the 2 largest parties in the
country, the PPP Pakistan People’s Party and the PML-N Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz,
and the ever burgeoning PTI Pakistan Tehreek Insaf, together with many other
smaller parties come election day, I advise all citizens to go out and vote to
that party which you think is better to the bright future of our country.
