The election of Mr Niaz Abbassi
as mayor of Oxford is an eye-opener for Pakistanis and belies the perception
that Pakistanis are discriminated against in the West. Mr Abbassi is a British
national of Pakistani origin and was from a small village near Murree but
because of his capabilities was elected as mayor. According to him, this would
not have been possible in Pakistan where positions are bought with money and the
patronage of powerful political and social mafias.
This also shows that diversity is respected in the west, unlike here where
ethnic, religious and sectarian differences are played up. Maybe we should learn
to appreciate the west for its social system where anyone can thrive provided
they work hard, and are capable.
