Gwadar port a Jewel
(tehmina firdous, bijing)
A jewel in the heart of
the least-developed province of Pakistan, Gwadar Port. It is the third warm
water deep sea port of Pakistan after the Karachi Port Qasim. The construction
of the deep-sea port at Gwadar began in 2002 under the government of General
Pervez Musharraf. The port was then handed over to PSA international, the
highest bidder, as a duty-free port.
The project is bound to generate tremendous economic activity in Baluchistan and
play a key role in alleviating poverty not only in the province but the country
as a whole. Gwadar port would help bring Baluchistan’s coastal areas into
socio-economic mainstream. It will serve as a catalyst for fast track
development of Baluchistan bringing it at par with other provinces of Pakistan
maintenance and investment in its development.
Construction of Gwadar Port was necessitated due to the fact that Karachi Port
was already heavily-loaded with serious congestion commercial, fishing, civil
and military shipping. It may be recalled that in 1971, the Indian Navy targeted
the Karachi Port leading to a massive harm to the economy of Pakistan. It was
felt that any future blockade by India would further devastate Karachi Port and
economy of the country. In order to relieve too much reliance on the Karachi
Port, another port by the name Port Qasim was established in Karachi. Now, with
the establishment of Gwadar Port in the province of Baluchistan the reliance on
Karachi Port will be further reduced.
In Feb 2013 was handed over to china according to the agreement china will
establish port with basic porting facilities. Port for naval and ship movements.
Installation of airport and other connecting the port via railway to easternmost
province of China – Xinjiang modern infrastructure. Opening up the port to goods
and traffic movements to central Asia. Connecting the port via railway to
eastern most province of China xinjiang the Gwadar port will enable China to
monitor its energy shipments from the Persian Gulf, and offer it, in the case of
any hostile interruption in such shipments, a safer alternative passage for its
energy imports from Central Asia. Its presence on the Indian Ocean will further
increase its strategic influence with major South Asian nations, particularly
Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, which would prompt the Indians in
turn to re-strengthen their Navy.
On the other hand Gwadar port is important for Pakistan for its economic
revival, to reduce unemployment .in this way Gwadar port is road for their
prosperity .
