The Crippling Power Crisis
(Taqdees Durrani, Karachi)
The power crisis persists
unabated, threatening to obliterate any progress that is being made towards
achieving the country's development goals, as more and more sectors get
affected, and tens of millions of people suffer, deprived of the kind of life
they can reasonably expect to lead in an emerging country.
The government must come to recognise the magnitude of the problem, and also its
repercussions. The time has come for the government to take stock. It must now
be ingrained like some mantra in the hearts and minds of the administration that
our number one priority must be to eradicate the power crisis, by whatever means
necessary. This present government cannot be blamed for the current crisis. It
is a problem that has accumulated over the years, under previous government.
But going on blaming them for our present woes will not get us anywhere. We are
quite aware of their failures. How we voted in the last elections is enough
reflection of that what we want to see now is what this government can provide
as an alternative. It is the one arena where they have the greatest opportunity,
albeit with the greatest obstacles, to prove their mettle.
