What Is the Annapurna Bhandar Scheme?

The Annapurna Bhandar Scheme is officially known as the Annapurna Yojana. It is a women's welfare program launched by the West Bengal state government.

It was first announced as part of the BJP's "Bhoroshar Shopoth" manifesto during the 2026 West Bengal Assembly Elections under the name Matri Shakti Bharosa Scheme. After the new government was formed in May 2026, the scheme was officially notified on 19 May 2026 and launched from 1 June 2026.

The scheme replaces the earlier Lakshmir Bhandar Scheme. The decision to launch it was taken during the first cabinet meeting of the newly elected West Bengal government on 11 May 2026, under Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

The scheme was introduced to provide direct financial support to women who have no fixed income, government salary, or pension. Its goal is to reduce the financial burden on economically vulnerable households. It is also to promote women's independence.
