Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) is India's largest government-funded health insurance scheme. Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched it on 23 September 2018. It is also called PM-JAY or the Ayushman Bharat Yojana.

The scheme covers about 55 crore people from 12.37 crore families (the bottom 40% of India's population). It gives each eligible family a health cover of ₹5 lakh per year for hospital treatment. The treatment is completely cashless and paperless at all empaneled hospitals.

2026 Key Updates

  • Now, all senior citizens aged 70 years and above are eligible for this scheme.
  • West Bengal joined this scheme in May 2026. It is now available across all 35 states and UTs.

Here is how to do the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana registration:

Step 1 – Check if You Are Eligible

  • Go to pmjay.gov.in
  • Click on "Am I Eligible?"
  • Enter your mobile number and OTP
  • Enter your name and state
  • Search by name, HHD number (household number), ration card, or RSBY URN
  • If your family is covered, your name will appear on screen

Step 2 – Collect Your Ayushman Card

If you are eligible, collect your Ayushman Card in one of these ways

Option A – At a Government Hospital or CSC

  • Visit any empaneled government hospital, health and wellness center, or Common Service Centre (CSC). Give your Aadhaar card and ration card.
  • A staff member will do your biometric verification and issue your Ayushman Card on the spot.

Option B – Through Online Portal

  • Go to pmjay.gov.in
  • Log in with your mobile number and OTP
  • Search for your name using SECC data
  • Verify your identity with your Aadhaar OTP
  • Download your e Ayushman Card directly

Option C – Through the Ayushman App

  • Download the Ayushman Bharat app from the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.
  • Log in with your Aadhaar and mobile number
  • Check eligibility and download your card

Step 3 – Use Your Card at the Hospital

When you need treatment

  • Go to any empaneled hospital
  • Show your Ayushman Card
  • The hospital's Ayushman Mitra (a dedicated staff membe) will verify your card and identity
  • Process your admission under the scheme
  • Ensure you receive cashless treatment
  • Handle all paperwork with the insurance company on your behalf

You pay nothing at the time of admission or discharge. Pre and post hospitalization costs (3 days before and 15 days after) are also covered.

  • Ration card or any family identity document
  • Voter ID, Driving License, or Passport
  • Proof of residence (utility bill, voter ID, or Aadhaar)

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana eligibility is based on Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data. The government does not set a specific income limit. Instead, families are selected based on deprivation and occupation criteria from the census data.

Rural Families – Who Qualifies?

A rural household qualifies if it has at least one of the following:

  • No land, no regular income, or belongs to a deprived category in SECC data
  • Only one room with kuccha walls and roof
  • No adult male member between 16 and 59 years
  • A female-headed household with no adult male member
  • Has a disabled member with no able-bodied adult
  • SC/ST household
  • A household that survives on manual casual labor

Urban Families – Who Qualifies?

Urban workers from these occupation categories are covered:

  • Ragpickers
  • Domestic workers
  • Street vendors, cobblers, hawkers
  • Construction workers, plumbers, painters
  • Security guards and sweepers
  • Transport workers like drivers, conductors, rickshaw pullers
  • Helpers in shops and dhabas
  • Home-based artisans and tailors
  • Washermen and security guards

Additional Eligible Groups (2026)

  • All senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of income or economic status
  • ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, and helpers
  • Building and construction workers
  • Sewer and septic tank workers
  • Transgender individuals

Who Is Not Eligible?

  • Families who own motorized farming equipment
  • Families with a government employee
  • Families with income above ₹10,000 per month (from non-agricultural sources)
  • Families with a refrigerator or landline phone
  • Families who own more than 5 acres of irrigated land (or 10 acres unirrigated)
  • Families in a four-wheeler vehicle (except tractors)

  • The card can be used in any state.
  • Covers more than 1900 medical procedures.
  • Covers costs before hospitalization (3 days) and after discharge (15 days).
