Powerful Monsoon System to Hit Pakistan: Heavy Rains and Storms Expected

A significant new monsoon system is set to impact Pakistan starting today, bringing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms across Punjab and Sindh through August 29.

In Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Dadu, Thatta, Badin, Sajawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Jamshoro, Tando Allahyar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Nagarparkar, Islamkot, Mithi, Mirpurkhas, Umerkot, Matiari, Sanghar, and Sukkur, residents should prepare for intense rain and thunderstorms.

Areas such as Ghotki, Shikarpur, Kashmore, Khairpur, Larkana, Jacobabad, and Naushahro Feroze may experience strong winds, intermittent showers, and severe thunderstorms. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has also warned of potential flooding in low-lying areas of Southeast Sindh, which could disrupt daily life and damage infrastructure, including mud houses, walls, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels. Road closures are possible.

In response to the anticipated heavy rainfall, Karachi has declared a state of emergency, canceled municipal staff leaves, and instructed municipal services to remain on high alert. Fishermen are advised to avoid the sea from August 27 to 30 due to rough waters.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert for more monsoon rains in Punjab, starting today. Heavy rainfall is expected in Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Talagang, Mianwali, Sargodha, Jhelum, Sialkot, Narowal, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, and Rahim Yar Khan, with potential flooding in D.G. Khan, Multan, and Bahawalpur divisions.

Other regions such as Mardan, Swabi, Nowshera, Charsadda, Chitral, Dir, Swat, Malakand, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Balakot, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Kohat, Orakzai, Hangu, Waziristan, and Kurram will also see varying intensities of rain.

In Balochistan, thunderstorms and rain are expected in Barkhan, Musakhail, Loralai, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Nasirabad, Jafarabad, Lasbela, Khuzdar, and surrounding areas. Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan will experience partly cloudy weather with occasional rain and thunderstorms in scattered locations.
