LACK OF POLITICAL EDUCATION IN PAKISTAN

(Madeeha Shaukat, )

Politics, an essential subject which plays a vital role for the betterment of civil society. Our education system focuses on subjects like Mathematics, Science, technology etc. and left Social studies behind, especially in the political sphere. Teachers focus on geography and history while ignoring the importance of civics. The absence of political thinking is not only at our schools but also in our homes. Social studies teachers are directing their student’s attention too much towards the past when they really should be using their time to teach government and politics. Parents also do not pay any attention to teach politics to their children, even though it has its own importance.

Our country is also facing this problem and most of the part of the population of our country is not even aware of basics of politics due to the lack of education, low literacy rate, and lack of political information revolving around their surroundings. The lack of political education creates negative impact on the economy of the country because most of the people lack information regarding politics, they do not even know how to cast their vote. Mostly people do not understand the power and importance of their vote and most of the time they waste their vote by not casting it due to being unaware from its importance. Due to limited information people have limited thinking ability regarding politics, so it is difficult for them to understand the mission, vision, strategies, agenda and tactics of the politicians and they ends up by electing the wrong or unsuitable person for the leadership of the country. Most of the areas of Pakistan specially villages still have Jagirdari system, here people are not well educated and they are totally unaware from the politics. Jagirdars took the advantage of the limited knowledge of the people and pressurize them to cast their vote according to their desire. There limited knowledge enfolds them to act according to their Jagirdars desire.

After all these, we can still solve this problem by working on it. Our education system should start focusing on political education. Teachers and parents should also pay attention towards politics and teach their children regarding politics. Media should also play its vital role in spreading the awareness about the politics. Government should also make education sure for backward areas specially villages of the country. Government should take steps to eliminate the Jagirdari system in order to make people feel free for casting their votes according to their own desire.

After getting the political education, people would become capable to understand the political issues. People would be able to understand the mission, vision, strategies, agenda and tactics of the politician, they would be able to understand the importance and power of the vote and they would use this power responsibly and carefully. Their thinking ability regarding politics would expand and they would be able to elect the right person for the leadership of a country which leads to the progress of the country.
