Shattering the patriarchy in pieces altogether ; this brave 24 years old female car mechanic from Multan is an incredibly strong female icon, truly driving change!

What is contemporarily perceived as a male job, Uzma Nawaz is breaking stereotypes and labels, truly showing how women are equally capable of contributing in whichever sector they wish to. Commendably fighting gender limitations and financial constraints, Uzma spent years dedicatedly in earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering and attaining a job in an auto-repair garage in Multan.

She said she took it as a challenge against all odds and was determined to drop the jaws!

“I took it up as a challenge against all odds and the meagre financial resources of my family. When they see me doing this type of work they are really surprised.” – said Uzma speaking to AFP.

Hailing from a small town Dunyapur, Uzma throughout her academic years showed extraordinary record and availed scholarships. She often skipped meals, gave up on personal wants to complete her degree due to being under strict financial constraints. Her achievements are one-off and an inspiration for all the women of Pakistan, who give up on their dreams due to financial restrictions and gender roles. She said that no hurdle or hardship could break her will and determination.

She moves heavy tyres around the garage like a pro and impresses her colleagues with her strength. One of her co-workers M Attaullah said that she does her job like a man and in an efficient manner, without letting anything hamper her way to success.

“I was shocked to see a young girl lifting heavy spare tyres and then putting them back on vehicles after repairs” – a customer said, amazed by her.

Her father said that he doesn’t encourage the idea of women working on workshops as it is perceived ‘bad’ by the society – but it is her dream and she is ready to take any music for it.
