The issue of drone strikes in
the tribal region of Pakistan, carried out by America which says its targeting
terrorists but which have become a menace to the people of the tribes living
there, are at the fore front thanks to a Peace March organized by Imran Khan and
his party. The government has mostly voiced an ambiguous message about the whole
issue and avoided any confrontation with the US.
Drone Strikes have proved catastrophic for the people of the region with
thousands killed and numerous displaced. The logic of eliminating terrorists by
America without trial has done nothing but instill anger in the hearts of the
tribal’s. There is no proof that so called terrorists have been killed or
whether the people killed had anything to do with terrorism. The casualties have
been innocent people, women and children. Granted that some terrorists have
infiltrated the region but to just drop bombs on people on suspicion is not
practiced anywhere else in the world. Drones do not have eyes and are operated
by people with flimsy evidence.
The government must make its position clear on this matter and must tell the
Americans to stop bombarding innocent people. The present government maintains
the government of Musharraf made a deal with the Americans. But that argument
doesn’t hold whether as the PPP has been in power for 5 years now. It’s high
time it took and stand and protected its citizens.
